Custom Shaft Machining Methods Manufactured Shaft Parts

Shafts should be divided into high precision shafts and normal shafts.In YUHENG Machining, high  precision shafts should be processed by jacking up both ends of the center hole, which can ensure the concentricity of each dimension of the shaft, and is also beneficial to the grinding machine processing in the next process. Use a center frame for long shafts, and a knife frame for thin shafts. For general requirements, a three jaw chuck able to be used at one end, and a three  jaw chuck could be used for disc parts, or a tooling fixture can be used for installation and processing.


Common components Materials Shaft Machining Services

45 steel is a common material for shaft parts. After being quenched and tempered (or normalized) at a low price, it can obtain better cutting performance, and can obtain comprehensive mechanical properties such as high strength and toughness. After quenching, the surface hardness can be improved. Up to 45~52HRC.
Alloy structural steel such as 40Cr is suitable for shaft parts with medium precision and high rotation speed. After quenching, tempering and quenching, this kind of steel has better comprehensive mechanical properties.
Bearing steel GCr15 and spring steel 65Mn, after quenching and tempering and surface high-frequency quenching, the surface hardness can reach 50~58HRC, and it has high fatigue resistance and good wear resistance, and can manufacture high-precision shafts.
38CrMoAIA nitrided steel can be selected for the spindle of precision machine tools (such as grinding wheel shaft of grinding machine and spindle of coordinate boring machine). After quenching and tempering and surface nitriding, this steel can not only obtain high surface hardness, but also maintain a soft core, so it has good impact toughness. Compared with carburized and quenched steel, it has the characteristics of small heat treatment deformation and higher hardness


YUHENG Machining Comprehension of Shaft Machining Techniques

  • In order to determine the position of the shaft, the journal that plays a supporting role usually requires high dimensional accuracy (IT5~IT7). The dimensional accuracy of the journal of the assembly transmission parts is generally low (IT6~IT9)

  • The geometric accuracy of shaft parts mainly refers to the roundness and cylindricity of the journal, outer cone surface, Morse taper hole, etc., and its tolerance should generally be limited within the dimensional tolerance range. For the inner and outer circular surfaces with high precision requirements, the allowable deviation should be marked on the drawing

  • The position accuracy requirements of shaft parts are mainly determined by the position and function of the shaft in the machine. Usually, the coaxiality requirements of the journal of the assembly transmission part to the support journal should be ensured, otherwise the transmission accuracy of the transmission part (gear, etc.) will be affected, and noise will be generated. For ordinary precision shafts, the radial runout of the matching shaft segment to the bearing journal is generally 0.01~0.03mm, and the high precision shaft (such as the main shaft) is usually 0.001~0.005mm

  • Generally, the surface roughness of the shaft diameter matched with the transmission part is Ra2.5~0.63μm, and the surface roughness of the support shaft diameter matched with the bearing is Ra0.63~0.16μm
